====== Assistant Inspector/Firefighter/EMT FLSA ====== This Job Reports to: Deputy Chief =====Job Summary===== Primary job duties include performing a variety of difficult and specialized building and fire protection equipment and systems inspections involving the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. Provides technical advisory services to the general public. Ensures code violations are corrected and follows up with legal action as required. Interprets codes and model standards. Attends meetings and conferences. Prepares reports and composes correspondence. Performs related work as required. Duties are performed under general supervision. Duties require; significant amounts of walking; standing for long periods; climbing stairs; and working during inclement weather. Secondary job duties include performing fire extinguishment, emergency medical procedures, safe and efficient operation of all Authority apparatus and equipment, inspect and maintain apparatus and equipment, cleans and maintains buildings and grounds and to perform related work assignments as required by higher ranking officers in between inspections or in instances that the Executive Director deems necessary. =====Duties And Responsibilities===== ====Primary Essential Job Functions==== * Conducting various types of inspections and plan reviews to ensure compliance with fire and building codes and related laws and ordinances in new and existing buildings. * Maintains clear and concise records of public education programs, and inspections. * Investigates complaints related to fire code violations such as illegal burns and accumulated waste presenting a fire hazard. Meets and discusses violations with individuals, and issues citations as necessary. * Efficiently & safely drives and operates Authority apparatus and equipment to emergency and non-emergency calls. * Assist with investigations into complaints of fire ordinances. * Attend training sessions in firefighting, equipment & apparatus operation and medical continuing education. * Abides by the Authority's Privacy Policies. ====Secondary Essential Job Functions==== * Responds to fires, ambulance calls or to the station after normal work hours when called or paged by the Authority's dispatch center. * Must efficiently and effectively operate all firefighting and EMS equipment. * Must lift or assist in lifting patients or victims in hazardous and non-hazardous environments. * Assist with hydrant and water flow inspections. * Assist in training of Authority employees in pump operation and medical treatment. Attends monthly training per Authority policies. * Prepare reports to higher ranking officers as required. * Keeps the fire station in a clean and orderly condition per Authority policies. * Keeps apparatus in a clean and orderly condition per Authority policies. * Perform building, vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair tasks. * Prepare reports as required by superior officers. ====Supplemental Job Functions=== * None =====Knowledge, Skills and Abilities===== * Knowledge of firefighting principles, practices and procedures of modern fire science normally acquired through the completions and certification in MFFTC Firefighter II and Fire Officer I and State of Michigan EMT-Basic licensure. * Working knowledge of the geography, streets, rural areas and important locations within the Authority. * State certifications: Michigan FF-II, Michigan Fire Inspector and EMT-Basic or higher. * Knowledge of the Authority's rules, policies, procedures and guidelines. * Knowledge of job hazards, state laws and Authority Ordinances. * Knowledge of the Incident Management System. * Ability to maintain current State of Michigan EMS License and required certifications and attend continuing education classes/courses. * Ability to report off-duty for station call-in staffing. * Ability to maintain ones physical ability to perform essential and supplemental job functions. * Ability to lift extremely heavy objects or persons. * The ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. * Computer literacy in word processing programs is a must. * Skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with department staff and members of the public. * Valid State of Michigan driver’s license. * High school diploma or GED. * Have no felony convictions. * Successfully complete SHAES fulltime physical agility exam. * State of Michigan EMT-Basic licensure as a minimum, State of Mchigan EMT-Paramedic preferred. =====Working Conditions===== * Work is frequently preformed in hazardous emergency situations in all types of environments. High amounts of stress are often associated with this type of work. Employees performing essential job functions often physically exert themselves beyond average, normal modes of a daily work environment. * Work is frequently preformed in an office setting when not on inspections. * Work is normally performed during a forty-hour workweek, eight hour day starting at 8AM to noon and 1PM to 5PM including two fifteen minute breaks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. =====Reporting Relationship===== * Reports to the Deputy Chief. * Assistant Inspector/Firefighter/EMT responding to alarms are to report to the Incident Commander before embarking on any action.
